We are a rare website design firm in Boise (http://www.openpotion.com) that doesn't do SEO. We love to tell our clients when looking for a good Internet marketing firm to find one willing to white-label their services. Why? Because many companies that claim to do SEO actually are having another larger SEO firm do the work or are outsourcing it. If they are a firm that is willing to white-label their services then they are more likely to be the actual firm doing the work... because no firm wants to white label if they are doing it... plus the price would be marked up twice! ...its just too difficult. Just a little trick.

You are correct in your assumption in regard to Site Links not displaying w/ general search terms. Google is attempting to display Site Links only for company 'branded' search terms.

Of course, it gets a little mucky when some companies have names similar to general keyphrases (seoboise.com for example is very hard to trigger Site Links for), and Google doesn't always properly detect a branded search as well. Nonetheless, considering all of the real estate Site Links hog up it, they are not to be ignored!

Meta tags have always been important, IMHO. Even though Google does not look for keyphrases within the descriptions tag, they still may use the Meta Description contents as a SERP result listing - or Site Link. And, let's not forget that other search engines still do make use of Meta Tags.

Something else I should have mentioned in the post above...

Site Links that result from a branded search are different from Site Links that result from a general search (for keyphrases). Case in point, <a href="http://www.google.com/search?&q=idaho+hot+springs" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">search for Idaho Hot Springs</a>, take a look at the first result and differently formatted Site Links... these ones do not contain descriptive test, and thus cannot yet be optimized unlike branded search Site Links. However, you can remove general term Site Links through the <a href="https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Google Webmaster Tools interface</a>.

Thank you for your insightful comment!

Good post - I've had a lot of people asking about how to get those links to show up for their site. Do you find they show more frequently when the search term is the specific name of the company/domain?

I've found they don't appear usually for more general keyword searches...?

Once again, this is another sign that meta-tags do still matter; having them optimized is an important part of the websites design. Keep providing great SEO info and tips - we'll keep reading them!

EXCELSIOR!

Post panda update it's even more important to optimize your ad placement on a website. It seams that the feel of a website and the placement of too many ads will affect the performance of your ads as well as the performance of the site itself. Thanks for adding this video with the blog post!

Adwords help pay per click advertisers rank better in Google search results, and have their ads appear for as many impressions as possible. This was the basic premise behind the tool.
